How to use AI to make study notes you can check

To use AI to make study notes, prepare a bounded source, generate one clearly labelled draft, check every important point against the source, and turn only the corrected notes into questions you attempt without looking. Keep source locations and unresolved issues beside the notes. AI can help reorganize supplied material, but it cannot establish that the material is correct, complete, appropriate for your course, or learned.

The prepare, generate, check, retrieve workflow

This workflow has four gates. A note does not move to the next gate because it sounds polished.

The workflow makes AI assistance auditable. It also separates this page from summarizing existing notes with AI: here, you are building study notes from a source; there, you are compressing notes you have already made.

Gate 1: prepare a bounded source

Start with the learning task. Identify whether you are mapping a lecture’s main concepts, a textbook section, a paper’s method, or questions for a seminar. Write one outcome that can be checked. “Understand chapter four” is vague; “explain the three stages in the chapter’s model and distinguish their conditions” gives the notes a job.

Record the source title, author or speaker, edition or version, date, and the exact pages, sections, or timestamps covered. Preserve headings and labels that carry structure. If the source depends on a figure, equation, table, demonstration, or tone of voice, mark it for direct review rather than pretending the text alone captures it.

Do not upload or paste material you do not have permission to use. Follow course, institution, workplace, privacy, and copyright rules. Remove personal or sensitive information when it is not necessary for the study task. UNESCO’s guidance for generative AI in education and research frames educational use around a human-centred approach and addresses concerns including data privacy and human agency; it is policy guidance, not evidence that a particular note-taking workflow is effective or permitted by every institution.

Gate 2: generate a candidate, not a final answer

Choose the representation that fits the next action. A detailed prose summary can help show relationships; key points can create a candidate map; question-and-answer pairs can create candidate prompts. Ask for clear separation between concepts, examples, conditions, and open questions rather than one smooth paragraph.

Keep the unedited result. Without it, later corrections can make the workflow look more accurate than it was. Add a label such as “AI-assisted draft, not checked” and the date. If the result introduces a fact that is not present in the supplied source, do not rescue it from memory; mark it unsupported.

Avoid repeated prompting until an answer looks agreeable. That process can hide instability without establishing truth. One bounded output plus a source comparison gives you a clearer record of what was retained, omitted, or changed.

Gate 3: check the notes against the source

Break the generated result into atomic statements. One row should contain one definition, relationship, example, condition, or claim. Then find the exact source location and assign a status:

  • Supported: the wording and scope match the source.
  • Revise: the main idea is present but a condition, definition, or relationship is wrong or incomplete.
  • Unsupported: the source selection does not support the statement.
  • Omitted: important source material is absent from the draft.
  • Ambiguous: the wording could mean more than one thing and needs rewriting.

The AI summary accuracy guide provides a broader checking process. For study notes, pay particular attention to terms that look familiar, because a small change in a definition or boundary can make a later answer confidently wrong.

Add omitted material as its own row rather than silently inserting it into the generated output. The ledger is valuable even when the draft is good: it shows which statements were actually checked and which remain outside your review.

Gate 4: turn checked notes into retrieval prompts

Studying requires an action by the learner, not merely possession of tidy notes. Convert checked ideas into questions, hide the answer, attempt a response, and then correct it from the source. A definition prompt can ask for a term and its boundary; an explanation prompt can ask why two concepts relate; an application prompt can present a new case only when the source gives enough information to evaluate it.

Cornell University’s Cornell Note Taking System describes using cues, reciting answers without looking at the notes, reflecting, reviewing, and summarizing. This workflow borrows the separation between notes, cues, and summary; it does not claim that Cornell University evaluated AI-generated notes or this page.

Dunlosky and colleagues’ evidence review rated practice testing and distributed practice as high-utility techniques across the evidence the authors examined. That finding does not show that arbitrary generated questions are accurate, that this workflow produces a particular grade, or that Summarise Visually improves learning. The question must first be checked, and the learner must make an answer-hidden attempt.

Worked example: from source map to checked prompt

Imagine an instructor-created paragraph for a fictional class. It defines three stages in a process, gives one condition under which stage two is skipped, and includes a diagram with an additional branch.

A candidate key point says: “The process always moves through three stages in order.” The prose actually includes an exception, so the ledger status is revise. The corrected note becomes: “In the default sequence described in the fictional paragraph, stages one to three proceed in order; under the stated condition, stage two is skipped.” The diagram remains marked “visual check required” because its additional branch was not captured in the paragraph.

A retrieval prompt then asks: “What is the default stage order, and what condition changes it?” The learner hides the corrected answer, attempts it, and checks both parts against the instructor’s source. This example demonstrates the workflow only; it is not an app output or evidence of a learning effect.

Organize the final study note

Once the ledger is complete, place the checked content into a stable structure:

  1. Source and coverage statement.
  2. Three to seven major concepts, depending on the material rather than a forced quota.
  3. Definitions with boundaries and source locations.
  4. Relationships, processes, or comparisons.
  5. Examples and visuals to revisit.
  6. Uncertainties and unresolved questions.
  7. Answer-hidden retrieval prompts.
  8. A short summary written after checking.

For lecture material, the lecture summary template provides fields for concepts, evidence, examples, uncertainties, and review questions. Preserve the speaker’s qualifications and timestamps where available.

A bounded Summarise Visually workflow

Current project review supports supplied text and selected Detailed, Key Points, and Q&A modes. That evidence does not establish recording, transcription, visual interpretation, automatic source citations, question validation, hidden-answer testing, factual accuracy, or a guaranteed number of useful study items.

Supply only a bounded text selection you are permitted to use. Choose one mode for the intended representation, retain the unedited result, and move it into the verification ledger. Keep the source open while checking. If a visual, equation, or missing section affects the claim, add it manually after direct inspection rather than implying the app processed it.

In Q&A mode, treat both questions and answers as candidates. Because current evidence does not establish hidden-answer testing, create that separation yourself before attempting retrieval. The product’s role ends at organizing supplied text; the learner remains responsible for checking, correcting, practicing, and following course rules.

Limits and verification

  • Generated notes can be fluent and still contain errors, omissions, merged concepts, or missing conditions.
  • A bounded source selection can exclude decisive context; label the coverage rather than presenting it as a complete topic.
  • Text cannot necessarily preserve diagrams, equations, tables, demonstrations, or speaker emphasis.
  • Generated questions can be trivial, ambiguous, leading, or unsupported, and visible answers do not create a retrieval attempt.
  • The cited study-technique evidence does not test Summarise Visually or guarantee a result for this workflow.
  • Rules for acceptable AI assistance, disclosure, citation, privacy, and assessed work vary; the applicable institution or instructor decides them.

Verify consequential definitions and claims at the original source location. Keep unreviewed rows marked as such. If the subject affects health, law, finance, safety, or professional practice, obtain qualified guidance rather than relying on study notes or a generated summary.
